The San Francisco Ballet

Well-renowned in the performing arts, the San Francisco Ballet has enchanted and entertained for over 70 years. In 2008, the San Francisco Ballet will see its 75th Anniversary. The company is regarded for forging the first American ballet company in the nineteen-thirties. Their rich history is filled with performances that were a first on American soil, as they were the first to perform classics such as The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Their success has continued into the modern day thanks to the current artistic director, Helgi Tomasson. His renowned direction and choreography has both sustained and refreshed the magic of the San Francisco ballet.

The company began touring internationally, performing across the globe in Asia and Europe as early as the late 1950s, and that tradition has continued to this day. However, the 2008 tour will remain close to home. As part of their anniversary year commemoration, the San Francisco Ballet shall embark on a national tour with over thirty total performances in the USA.

See them in San Francisco

While the San Francisco Ballet may perform in gorgeous venues across the globe, there is nothing quite like a show at home. In the heart of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center is the legendary War Memorial Opera House. Located in close proximity to City Hall, the historical building hosted the first United Nations conference. The grandeur of the building’s structure radiates through its sumptuous architecture. The company officially called the Opera House their home in the 1970s and has remained happily located there since. As regal as the location may seem, seeing a performance is quite accessible. Ticket pricing is reasonably tiered by seat location, and special discounts exist for group attendance or program subscribers.
